Pleasant Valley Schools $10,000 for Team Rubicon

On September 25, 2017, Pleasant Valley students presented a $10,000 check to Team Rubicon at the School Board Meeting.  Christy Wood, Jake Wood’s mother, accepted the check on behalf of Team Rubicon.  Jake Wood is a PV alumn who started Team Rubicon. After the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Wood enlisted in the Marine Corps. After four years serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, he left the service to find his next mission in the world, but that mission found him.  In January 2010, Jake gathered a few former Marine friends and headed to Haiti to help in relief efforts.  He knew that highly trained military veterans possessed unique skills which could be used to great effect in a disaster situation.  Team Rubicon was born from that effort.

When PV students, faculty and staff saw the devastation in Texas after Hurricane Harvey, they knew they needed to act.  Across the district, students collected spare change, with the idea that doing a little bit can help a lot.  The district wanted to raise $1 for every student and staff member, which would be around $5,000.  Instead, they raised $10,000!

Homecoming is the week of September 4, 2017.  The Spartan Nation is gearing up for a great week!  Check below for information about the parade, dress up days, the carnival and the big game!

PARADE, Thursday, September 7

If you want to register your group or organization for the parade, click here.

The annual Homecoming Parade will be held on Thursday, September 7th, at 6:00 p.m. The parade will begin from the Scott Community College driveway, proceed through the entrance/exit onto Belmont Road, and end at the entrance to the west parking lots of the high school. Please CLICK ON THE MAP BELOW carefully note the directions below. 

 

Drop off procedures:

For floats, convertibles, participants, and everything other than students walking with their elementary school:  Belmont Road at the entrance of Scott Community College will close at 5:30pm.  We ask that you enter the Scott Community Campus from the Highway 67 (Great River Road).  In the map above, you will see a yellow line showing the drop off spot and turn around.

For elementary students and parents walking with their elementary school: Parents should drop off their children in the designated drop-off zone in the southernmost west parking lot.  Parents can park in the designated parking areas to the west of the stadium or at the Belmont Administration Center. Students walking in the parade should check in with teachers and principals in the area south of the west parking lots.  Please plan to arrive by 5:30 p.m. Parents are welcome to walk with their children.  Parents walking in the parade should park their vehicles and then walk to the area south of west parking lot to join up with other elementary school children and parents.  Elementary teachers and principals will escort students grouped by school to the beginning of the parade route. All parents and students present will walk to the float staging area located in the Scott Community College parking lots to get in line for the parade. Do not drop students off at the Scott Community College parking lots. We strongly encourage K/1 parents to participate in the parade with their child(ren). Please do not bring candy and other items to hand out during the parade.

Pick up procedures for elementary students walking with their elementary school: Students who participate in the parade need to be picked up at the west ticket booth, northeast of the drop off area. Please see the map on the back of this document. Do not pick up students prior to the end of the parade route. Students need to be picked up by parents no later than 6:30 p.m. Following the parade, students and their parents are invited to visit the Homecoming Carnival festivities in the new parking lot to the east of the tennis courts.  You will be able to walk from the west parking lots around the stadium and tennis courts to the carnival.

**Elementary participants will not join the parade if inclement weather occurs.  If questionable weather is in the forecast, a decision will be announced before dismissal from school the day of the parade.

 

CARNIVAL, Thursday, September 7:

The Homecoming Carnival is after the parade at 6:30 p.m. in the D parking lot (the new parking lot) at PVHS. We will have food trucks, a dunk tank, caricatures, face painting, henna, games, and much more. Admission is free at the Carnival, with donations accepted to benefit the Student Hunger Drive. Food Trucks and Caricatures have various prices and will accept cash.

CORONATION, Friday, September 8:

Voting for Homecoming King and Queen will take place on the student portal throughout the week (deadline Thursday at 3:30pm). The coronation of the Homecoming king and queen will take place Friday during the spirit assembly at 10:25 a.m.

HOMECOMING GAME, Friday, September 8:

Come cheer on the Spartans as they take on the Muscatine Muskies.  Don’t forget to wear your homecoming t-shirt!

HOMECOMING DANCE, Saturday, September 9, 8:30pm:

PVHS PTA needs your help.  We are looking for adults to chaperone the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  Please see SignUp (http://signup.com/go/iGEeTSW) for specific needs and let us know how you can help.

At our kickoff assembly, the junior high students chose the theme of “Hollywood” for the year. Join us in dressing up for these Hollywood themed spirit days to celebrate homecoming next week!

Wednesday: Incognito! Try to hide from the paparazzi by wearing hats, sunglasses, wigs, and anything else as a disguise.
Thursday: Spirit Day- wear your Spartan gear to cheer with the High School marching band and cheerleaders at the pep rally!

Community Event: Digital Citizenship Expert Speaks at PV

Pleasant Valley Community School District is holding an important community wide event on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 6:30pm in the PVHS Theatre.  Paul Davis, a world-known expert on empowering parents and educating children about internet safety, will speak about digital trails, footprints, cyberbullying and responsibility online.  Mr. Davis has been addressing digital citizenship for years, training Canada’s Department of National Defense, Canada’s border service and more than 400,000 parents and students in North America. We encourage all parents K-12 to attend this important event, as we work together to mold our children into 21st century adults.

In the 2016-17 school year, all 6th Grade students underwent a digital bootcamp, which included listening to a TedEd Talk by Mr. Davis.  Watch the video below to see what our students learned.

Join us for Meet and Greet Night, Monday, August 21!

5:00-5:25 PM    Welcome for parents of kindergarten students and new families to our district

5:30-6:15 PM    Elementary Meet and Greet (Please feel free to come at a time that works best for you.  This is an open house format.)

  • Meet your child’s homeroom teacher
  • Ask questions about the first day of school and become acclimated to your new classroom
  • Pick up your district calendar (one per family) and fill out any incomplete registration forms
  • Unpack your backpack and pick-up your school supplies purchased through the PTA
  • Sign up for various PTA volunteer opportunities

6:15-7:00 PM    Registration and school fee finalization with school office personnel, if needed.

  • Finish any outstanding registration forms indicated during classroom visit
  • Deposit money into your child’s Food Service account (can be done online)
  • Visit with a Durham School Services bus driver representative
  • Visit with school nurse

Free and Reduced Application:  New this year, we are introducing an online free and reduced application process to reduce paper and save you time.  Please see the below instructions on beginning your student’s 2017-2018 Free and Reduced Application.

  • To begin your Online free and reduced application, please log into your Parent Portal Account here.  (If you do not have an account please call our Administration Center at 563-332-5550.)
    • Please note that Free and Reduced application must be accessed from the Portal website link above; it is not available through the Portal Mobile App.
  • Once logged in, click the link for “Applications/Forms” on the left
  • Select “Click to start meal benefit application”

After your application has been processed you will receive notification in your parent portal inbox.

Snacks: If you’re bringing in a treat for a classroom, remember the Spartan Safe Snack list.  We only allow items on the list in our classrooms to make sure all treats are safe for all students.  We appreciate your help to keep all our students healthy!

This year, the Pleasant Valley Community School District is teaming up with school districts across the Quad Cities and the United Way to increase attendance.  We encourage you to watch this one-minute video below about the mission and importance of having students at school every day.  We’re hoping you’ll help us break attendance records on Wednesday, August 30.  We’re challenging every student to come to school to get the year started off right!

In an emergency, PV will send you notices via text and phone calls.  Information you give us during registration automatically signs you up for emergency phone calls.  But, if you want texts, too, you need to sign up. Click here to manage your preferences. Sign in and click on the Contacts Tab.  Your name will pop up, then click edit and make sure your information is correct!

Run with Carl

Support the Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation and Run with Carl.  The 5k, 5 mile and kids run is Labor Day, September 4, 2017 at the Life Fitness Center.  The races start at 7:30am and every dollar raised from registration fees goes directly to the PVEF and the Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation.  The PVEF provides scholarships for seniors, awarding 80 scholarships in 2017.  Six PVHS seniors received scholarships in 2017 thanks to proceeds from Run with Carl! Bridgeview students spent the last Friday before the end of the year celebrating a great year by visiting several stations with their school family groups.

Students spent the last day of school writing letters to future 7th graders and some got to play a game of kick ball!

Pleasant View Celebrates Literacy!

Pleasant View Elementary celebrated reading and curiosity at its annual Literacy Day!  On April 5, students and staff broke up into their character circles (groups of different-aged students lead by someone who is likely not their teacher).  The theme this year was “Books Open the Door to Curiosity.”  Students traveled to four stations in the building.  The first challenged students to think about a “growth mindset.”  They watched a video and discussed it, talking about facing challenges, asking for help, and growing their brains.  They played some games from around the world at the next station.  One of the games, “Down, Down, Down” is from Austrailia; students toss a bean bag back and forth, getting lower as the game progresses!  At station three, student created monster bookmarks! And finally, at the last station, each student brought a book they are currently reading and talked to the group about it.  After the stations, everyone found a place around the school and silently read for a half hour.  What a way to celebrate reading!

Math in the Real World at Pleasant View

Using real world examples helps students understand complex ideas. In Mrs. Gilbeck’s 2nd grade class, students are learning about averages and measurement by jumping!  Students work in teams with each person jumping as far as they can.  They measure two jumps in centimeters and inches.  Eventually, students will find the median and mode for their jumps and graph their results.

#PVProductions Works on First Podcast

It all started with an idea.  One student wanted to help other students learn about Digital Citizenship and now four students from Pleasant View are working on a podcast they hope will make an impact.  “This I believe…” will focus on issues these students want to talk about.  They all said they wanted to get involved because you hear podcasts from adults and teenagers, but you rarely get the perspective of younger kids.  They’ve worked for a month or so on their scripts, researching and fine-tuning.  We caught up with them as they taped for the first time.  Check out the final product here –>  http://bit.ly/2mTOtlG

More than 500 Students Participate in District Choir Festival

The Choir program in Pleasant Valley is growing and growing fast.  More than 500 students sang at this year’s District Choir Festival on Monday February 7, 2017.  That doesn’t count the nearly 300 students in the 4/5th grade choirs!

Students tackled songs from certain decades with each choir dressing up in the fashion of the times.  Check out the pictures below and video from the festival.

Pleasant View 2nd Graders Put the Big, Bad Wolf on Trial

Mrs. Nedved’s 2nd grade class is exploring the world of fairy tales and using the familiar stories to learn how to compare and contrast.  The students used information from The Three Little Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs to put the Big, Bad Wolf on Trial.  They performed a Reader’s Theater, written by Mrs. Nedved herself, for their families and a jury of their peers (the 2nd grade class next door).

Each of the three little pigs testified for the prosecution.  And the defense called witnesses, too, including the fox, the wolf’s grandmother and Rumpelstiltskin!  Goldilocks and Little Red Ridinghood took the stand, as well.

What a fun way to compare and contrast!

Student Artists Shine at PTA Reflections Ceremony

Pleasant Valley students showed off their skills at the PTA Reflections Awards Ceremony on Thursday, January 12, 2017.  This program continues to grow.  This year, PV had 249 entries from  198 students!

The PTA Reflections contest is a nationwide contest to support Arts Education. Students create their projects on their own time and submit artwork in six different catagories:  dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.  The work is judged by adult artists and each student receives a critique.  At the ceremony, all work is on display as each student is individually recognized for his or her creation.
