Bridgeview

Bridgeview Families: The cross grade level groups facilitated by an adult and focused on building students’ understanding of the Pillars of Character will meet again next week on Wednesday, March 29 at 10:40.  Students will focus on the pillar of responsibility and be asked to decipher the examples from non-examples when it comes to being responsible.  The family meeting will conclude with the creation of a “Responsibili–tree” to share all the jobs/actions we do.

Band Tour:  Bridgeview students will be treated to instrumental music compliments of the band students across the district in grades 6-12.  The students will perform on Thursday, March 30 at 1:30 and will feature some of Bridgeview’s very own instrumental music stars.

Bridgeview Showcase of Learning (formerly Bridgeview BLAST): On Thursday, April 6 beginning at 6:00pm, students at Bridgeview will “showcase” their learning through a variety of opportunities.  The evening will begin in the gymnasium at 6:00 with a program featuring the 6th grade band, the 4th and 5th grade Glissando choir and a video tribute to all the Bridgeview learners.  During the time in the gymnasium,  the many Bridgeview volunteers will also be recognized for their contributions to the success of our students.  Following the program, members of the audience will have the opportunity to visit the various classrooms to see their child’s learning firsthand as well as the various pieces of artwork hung and displayed around the building.  The final event of the evening will be a book give away compliments of the Bridgeview PTA.  This portion of the evening will be hosted in the cafeteria and allow each student attending the event to leave with a new text of their very own.  The evening promises to be a great opportunity to celebrate the learning journey of our students.  We look forward to seeing you there!!

PTA Thanks: In what has become a bit of a recurring theme, the staff and students at Bridgeview would like to express our thanks to the Bridgeview PTA for their work to upgrade and prepare the GAGA pits for year round use.  As a part of that upgrade, a special thanks is extended to Summit Concrete whose donation and installation of the concrete slabs made this project possible.  It is anticipated the GAGA pits will be fully operational in a couple of weeks.  Our students are so excited to begin to use these new and improved models!

PARKING CHANGES

Starting March 13, 2017, construction crews will begin the expansion and renovation of Pleasant Valley High School.  Read more about the project here.  Construction will start in the East Parking lot.  This lot will be off-limits which requires a change to parking procedures.  The goal is to keep traffic flowing and stop cars blocking traffic on Belmont Road.  Please review all traffic guidelines and included maps.  These changes will take effect March 13, 2017.

Daily Morning Drop Off (red)

Every morning Monday through Friday, parents/guardians dropping off students may use the north lot along Belmont Road.  To get as many cars through the stoplight, pull up as close as possible to the car in front of you.  When everyone stops, everyone gets out.  No matter what door the student wants to enter – we ask that you not stop until everyone stops – then all students can get out safely at the same time.  This allows for a smoother traffic flow.

Parent/guardian drivers may also use the west parking lot.  However, this intersection will not be manned and it is not advisable to turn left out of this parking lot.

THERE WILL BE NO DROP OFF IN THE EAST PARKING LOT TO ENTER NEAR THE WEIGHT ROOM – AS THE EAST PARKING LOT WILL BE CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION.

Daily Afternoon Pick Up (green)

Every afternoon Monday through Friday, parents/guardians picking up students may use the north lot along Belmont Road.  To get as many cars through the stoplight, pull up as close as possible to the car in front of you.

Parent/guardian drivers may also use the west parking lot, stacking along the outside of the parking lot and up to the intersection with staff parking.  However, this intersection will not be manned and it is not advisable to turn left out of this parking lot.

From 2:30-3:15pm, parent/guardian drivers may also use the circle drive normally used for busses.  Stacking is allowed during this time period, but this line will be closed at 3:15pm.

Early Dismissal Pick Up April 5 and May 3 (blue)

On these days, parents/guardians picking up students may use the north lot along Belmont Road.

Parent/guardian drivers may also use the west parking lot, stacking along the outside of the parking lot and up to the intersection with staff parking.  On these two days only, this intersection will be manned with a Sheriff’s Deputy until 12:25pm, parent/guardian drivers may also use the circle drive normally used for busses.  Stacking is allowed during this time period, but this line will be closed at 12:25pm.  Traffic will be directed through the parking lot and out to Belmont Road (please see map)

Student Drivers (yellow)

Students who drive to school will be allowed to park in the open parking lots marked in yellow on the maps.  The two West parking lots are open.  Access to the newer portion of the East Parking lot will now be off of College Drive on the Scott Community College campus.  Students can also park in the expanded lot near the softball and baseball fields.  Please schedule accordingly as the walk to the High School may be longer than in the past.

Click map for a larger view.

Our primary purpose is student safety.  Please follow these parking guidelines through the end of the school year, as we prepare for what will be a beautiful expanded and renovated PVHS.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.  “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Cody

Cell Phone Rules Clarification:  In general, the guidelines for cell phone usage at school have been aligned with our Cody Creed=At Cody School, we choose to be responsible, respectful, and safe.  Recently, the need has arisen to address some additional times and places for cell phone or device usage.

  1. No devices out at end of day on your way to the bus. This comes from some safety issues that have occurred while walking to the bus lines.
  2. No devices at recess (inside or outside, morning or afternoon). The exception to this rule is when we have been inside for several days in a row due to weather AND for special days like Grandparents’ Day when we don’t have access to the gym area.

Students are allowed to use their devices in class at the teachers’ discretion.  We have many great uses for technology in our instruction and want to be sure that is the focus for our students.  Thank you for supporting these two rules at Cody.  Please call Mrs. Brasche with any questions you may have.

Spring Pictures, Thursday, March 23Money will not be collected on that day.  When the pictures are processed, you will receive a proof package along with a price list.  There is no obligation to buy any of the pictures.  If you have preschoolers three years old or older, you may bring them in to have their picture taken. Hopewell

New! Hopewell Harvest Silent AuctionNo, it’s not fall yet, but plans are already underway for Hopewell Harvest 2017! Heads up…the Silent Auction will be a little different next fall. Room parents and classes will no longer be in charge of creating a basket. Instead, a Silent Auction committee is being formed to create the themes, ask for donations, and assemble the baskets. Heather Hagemann and Tara Bries are leading this committee. If you are interested in joining this committee, please contact Heather via email: heatherannehagemann@icloud.com. This committee is a great way to get involved and meet other PTA parents. We hope this new approach will alleviate some of the responsibility on the room parents and let those who love creating the baskets enjoy this fun fundraiser!

Posted March 2nd, 2017

For three months now, more than 70 Pleasant Valley Junior High students have been working after school on this year’s musical.  Dear Edwina follows a young girl who produces a backyard advice show with her friends from the neighborhood.  Along the way, Edwina answers advice letters with songs and dance.

It’s a fun and colorful show that features more than 30 soloists!  Our students have worked hard, so come on out and support them!  The show is Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 at 7:00pm in the Pleasant Valley Junior High Gym.  Tickets are $5 at the door.

PTA Kudos: Once again, the Bridgeview students and staff would like to express their appreciation to the PTA for their ongoing support!  Thank you for hosting the upcoming book fair so our students can purchase great new titles, sharing meals with our teachers during conferences, supporting JA during their annual Bowlathon, buying books for our newest kindergarten friends and the list goes on and on and on.  The support our Bridgeview PTA provides is truly remarkable and a living, breathing example of the importance of a rich home/school partnership.  Thank you PTA!

Pleasant Valley High School Ready for Expansion and Renovations

Posted February 22nd, 2017

The Pleasant Valley Community School Board has approved plans and bids for a major expansion and renovation at PVHS.  Because of continued growth, PVHS needs more room for just about everything from science classrooms to music storage to athletic practice space.  The project is scheduled to start in the spring of 2017 and be finished by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.

Click the slide show for larger images.

Construction crews will build a tower in the current senior parking lot.  The three story building will contain 10 classrooms (four of them state-of-the-art science rooms).  A new auxiliary gym will be built in the same area, as the current D gym will have a new purpose.  It will be split down the middle; half of it will be a new music rehearsal room and half of it will be a multi-purpose athletic room to provide space for practices like wrestling, dance and cheerleading.

Renovations also include a new main hallway which will connect the school from east to west.  Currently, if you stand at the cafeteria and look west, the hallway ends at D Gym.  Now, the hallway will continue through the current D gym and into the new addition, which will provide a much needed backbone to the building.

The main entrance will also get a face lift.  A new commons area for student collaboration will be added to the front of the school, as well as a new main office.  The guidance office will move into the old main office area, which will be renovated.  The old guidance office will also undergo construction to be turned into new special education rooms.

As the new tower and gym will be built on the current senior parking lot, more parking will be added onto the new parking lot in the southeast corner of the High School.

This major expansion is just the first phase of what will likely be three phases at PVHS, adding more classrooms and possibly a competition gym.  Renovations in those phases include a possible concert hall, as well.

6th Grade Parent Meeting, Tuesday, February 14:  Come to the Junior High Gym at 6:30pm and learn about the transition to the Junior High. Click here to learn more.

Valentine’s Day Parties, Tuesday, February 14 2:30pm: Valentine’s Day is a fun event as children enjoy giving and receiving valentines.  As a district we are working to minimize the amount of food items brought into the classrooms, especially the items that do not support a healthy life style. Please consider speaking with your child about not attaching Valentine candy treats to their card. If students are interested in including something additional with their Valentines, they may want to consider pencils, stickers, and other non-food items. If individual Valentines have attached candy or treats, these must follow the Spartan Safe Snack List. Click here for the list. UNITE Club Inspires Students to Respect Each Other

Posted February 1st, 2017

The UNITE Club at Pleasant Valley High School takes on a tough mission:  getting high school students to be nice to each other.  There have been dozens of movies, books, and tv shows that feature the cliques and social system of a high school.  It’s hard to get away from the stereotypes, but that’s exactly what UNITE Club hopes will happen.  A group of about 20 students meet once week to figure out how to make the school as inclusive as possible.  Each month, they address a different group of students with the hopes of getting all students to understand each other a bit better.  They produce a video and ask students to wear a ribbon in support of each group.  Right now, they’re working on a video about Religious Inclusion.  We’ve included the videos they’ve produced already this year below.

Pleasant View 2nd Graders Put the Big, Bad Wolf on Trial

Posted January 31st, 2017

Mrs. Nedved’s 2nd grade class is exploring the world of fairy tales and using the familiar stories to learn how to compare and contrast.  The students used information from The Three Little Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs to put the Big, Bad Wolf on Trial.  They performed a Reader’s Theater, written by Mrs. Nedved herself, for their families and a jury of their peers (the 2nd grade class next door).

Each of the three little pigs testified for the prosecution.  And the defense called witnesses, too, including the fox, the wolf’s grandmother and Rumpelstiltskin!  Goldilocks and Little Red Ridinghood took the stand, as well.

What a fun way to compare and contrast!

Iowa Report Card Released

Posted January 13th, 2017

Thursday, January 12, 2017, the state launched the updated 2016 Iowa School Report Card website that provides a snapshot of how all Iowa public schools and districts are performing in eight measurable areas.  Each school will then be grouped by comparable grade configurations (e.g., elementary schools, middle schools, high schools) into one of the six overall ratings:  Exceptional, High-Performing, Commendable, Acceptable, Needs Improvement, and Priority.

The Iowa School Report Card website, http://reports.educateiowa.gov/schoolreportcard/, was developed by the Iowa Department of Education as a requirement of the 2013 education reform law. This component of the law, requires the Department to evaluate and rate schools based on their performance on the following eight measures:

The Iowa School Report Card rates schools on the following educational measures:

  • Proficiency: The percentage of students scoring proficient or better on reading and mathematics assessments.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (FRL, IEP and ELL): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for students with disabilities, students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals, and English Language Learners.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (Minority student within school comparison): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for between minority and non-minority students. This measure reports the difference in proficiency levels between student groups within the school.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (Minority student to state average): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for between minority and non-minority students. This measure reports the difference in proficiency levels between minority students in the school to the statewide average.
  • College and Career-Ready Growth: The percentage of students who are making the year-to-year growth necessary to be ready for college and career training by the end of high school.
  • Annual Expected Growth: The percentage of students making a year of academic growth in a year’s time on reading or mathematics assessments.
  • College and Career Readiness: The percentage of students who score at or above a level of performance in reading and mathematics that predicts a higher probability of postsecondary success. (Middle/high schools only.)
  • Graduation Rate: The percentage of ninth-grade students who finished high school within five years. (High schools only.)
  • Attendance: The average daily attendance of students, which is the total number of days students were enrolled and present divided by the total number of possible attendance days.
  • Staff Retention: The percentage of teachers, school administrators and other licensed staff members who remained employed in a school over consecutive school years.
  • Parent Involvement Teacher Survey: A survey of teacher practices and perceptions of parent involvement. This measure is for information purposes only and is not included in the overall rating. This measure along with a parent survey to parents will be included in the ratings in future versions of the report card.

We believe this information can be helpful in our goal of having the finest academic and extra-curricular programs in the state. Not in some things but in everything. Not for some kids but for every kid. However, student performance data only tells part of the story about how our schools are doing. Our belief as a district is that it is critical that we maintain a mindset of continuous improvement for all of our programs, learners and staff. Working with our schools to support high learning expectations for your child(ren) is a critical component to achieving excellent outcomes for each and every student.

MAP & FAST Testing Starts January 17

FAST:  Starting on Tuesday our students will begin the FAST assessment. This assessment is a screener of foundational literacy skills. The assessment itself is a series of short one minute assessments in kindergarten and first grade. Second through sixth grade students will read three different passages, each lasting one minute.

MAP:  Tuesday will also mark the start of MAP testing for students in grades three through six. We take two MAP Assessments one Math and one Reading. Our students are scheduled to take only one MAP test a day. You can help our students do their best on these assessments by making sure they get enough sleep (8-10hrs) and have a good breakfast.

Updated Spartan Safe Snack List:  Every six months, we update our Spartan Safe Snack List.  The list includes the items that we allow in our classrooms to make sure all students can enjoy them safely.  Check out the list here!

Speeding Tickets – Bridgeview Style: Please ask your children about speeding tickets being issued in the halls at Bridgeview.  We are working to improve the safe and respectful passage in our hallways, especially during the lunch/recess time frame.  Students are asked to walk in the hallways, use an appropriate voice level while moving down the hall from lunch to be respectful to our peers, and to walk on the appropriate side of the hallway.  Violators are issued a ticket from an adult and expected to sit “reflectively” for 10 minutes during their recess as a consequence.  It is amazing to see the improvement that has already been noticed by adults in the building.

PTA Pulse: Click here to read all things Bridgeview PTA, including information about next week’s Skate Party, Free Movie Night and the minutes from the latest meeting.

Join Us at the Rink –  Parents and students are reminded of the PTA Skate Party scheduled for Tuesday, January 17 from 6-8 PM at the Skate Park in Eldridge.  Plan to come join the fun!

And Another PTA Event – Mark your calendar now for the PTA Movie Night in Bridgeview’s very own gym on Friday, January 27!!  Great family fun for the perfect price ————-FREE!

Drop-Off Reminder – On the days when the wind chill/temperature (below 0) or the rain prevents students from participating in Yak n’ Trak and students are entering through Door C.  Please continue to pull all the way up as far as you can go and have the students walk the short distance back to Door C if need be.  Your assistance allows us to unload more students along the sidewalk more quickly and keeps the traffic moving ensuring more students are able to arrive at school on time.   As always, thank you for your cooperation and help in these matters.

Learn about the PTA, over coffee! Friday, January 20:  A clear theme of the PTA survey centered around the notion of  “I don’t know what the PTA does.” So, let’s fix that. Join us, Friday, Jan. 20 from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. in the Cody cafeteria for coffee and conversation. Ask us anything – what the PTA committees do, our mission, the board members roles, we’ll answer everything. And if you have no questions, just come and meet some new faces.
