Pleasant Valley High School Ready for Expansion and Renovations

Posted February 22nd, 2017

The Pleasant Valley Community School Board has approved plans and bids for a major expansion and renovation at PVHS.  Because of continued growth, PVHS needs more room for just about everything from science classrooms to music storage to athletic practice space.  The project is scheduled to start in the spring of 2017 and be finished by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.

Click the slide show for larger images.

Construction crews will build a tower in the current senior parking lot.  The three story building will contain 10 classrooms (four of them state-of-the-art science rooms).  A new auxiliary gym will be built in the same area, as the current D gym will have a new purpose.  It will be split down the middle; half of it will be a new music rehearsal room and half of it will be a multi-purpose athletic room to provide space for practices like wrestling, dance and cheerleading.

Renovations also include a new main hallway which will connect the school from east to west.  Currently, if you stand at the cafeteria and look west, the hallway ends at D Gym.  Now, the hallway will continue through the current D gym and into the new addition, which will provide a much needed backbone to the building.

The main entrance will also get a face lift.  A new commons area for student collaboration will be added to the front of the school, as well as a new main office.  The guidance office will move into the old main office area, which will be renovated.  The old guidance office will also undergo construction to be turned into new special education rooms.

As the new tower and gym will be built on the current senior parking lot, more parking will be added onto the new parking lot in the southeast corner of the High School.

This major expansion is just the first phase of what will likely be three phases at PVHS, adding more classrooms and possibly a competition gym.  Renovations in those phases include a possible concert hall, as well.

If students are interested in including something additional with their Valentines, they may want to consider pencils, stickers, and other non-food items. UNITE Club Inspires Students to Respect Each Other

Posted February 1st, 2017

The UNITE Club at Pleasant Valley High School takes on a tough mission:  getting high school students to be nice to each other.  There have been dozens of movies, books, and tv shows that feature the cliques and social system of a high school.  It’s hard to get away from the stereotypes, but that’s exactly what UNITE Club hopes will happen.  A group of about 20 students meet once week to figure out how to make the school as inclusive as possible.  Each month, they address a different group of students with the hopes of getting all students to understand each other a bit better.  They produce a video and ask students to wear a ribbon in support of each group.  Right now, they’re working on a video about Religious Inclusion.  We’ve included the videos they’ve produced already this year below.

Practical Science: Which Paper Towel is Best?

Posted January 31st, 2017

Students in Mr. Yank’s Science class at Riverdale Heights are using what they’ve learned to find out which paper towel is the most absorbent.

Mr. Yank laid out five different types of paper towels for students to test.  First, they looked at each paper towel and came up with a hypothesis – which one would absorb the most and which would absorb the least amount of water?  Then, each team of scientists used a graduated cylinder to perform their experiments.  The class has been studying the graduated cylinder, how to use it and when it’s most useful.  The scientists filled each cylinder with 250 ml of water, then held the paper towel in the water for 1 minute.  They looked at the amount of water in the cylinder after the experiment to determine how much water the paper towel absorbed.

What an easy and fun way to find out which paper towel is best!

Bridgeview

Early dismissal, Wednesday, February 1.

Traffic at Bridgeview:  Please be reminded when dropping off students at Bridgeview and/or picking them up, that there is no turning right into the Bridgeview parking lot from the left lane off of Davenport.  Several parents have identified this as an ongoing safety concern.  The LeClaire Police department has been asked to increase their presence at this intersection.  Thank you for your attention and efforts to comply with this concern.

Electronic Devices:   As a reminder, elementary students are asked to keep their phones in their backpacks/lockers during the school day.  Similarly, students with “smart watches” are asked to refrain from using the phone/texting/game functions during the time between 8:30 and 3:00.  Those students who do not, will be asked to put their watches in their lockers/bookbags until the end of the day.  Thank you for your support of your students’ learning environment.

PARENTS OF CHILDREN IN THIRD AND FIFTH GRADES:  During the week of February 6th, 2017, students in third and fifth grades will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT).  These tests measure students’ abilities and provide information used to help assess their academic needs.  Please be sure your child gets adequate sleep and healthy breakfasts during test week.  Tests will be administered during the school day, so it is also best to make sure your child arrives at school on time.  Please direct any questions or concerns regarding this test to your building counselor.

Iowa Report Card Released

Posted January 13th, 2017

Thursday, January 12, 2017, the state launched the updated 2016 Iowa School Report Card website that provides a snapshot of how all Iowa public schools and districts are performing in eight measurable areas.  Each school will then be grouped by comparable grade configurations (e.g., elementary schools, middle schools, high schools) into one of the six overall ratings:  Exceptional, High-Performing, Commendable, Acceptable, Needs Improvement, and Priority.

The Iowa School Report Card website, http://reports.educateiowa.gov/schoolreportcard/, was developed by the Iowa Department of Education as a requirement of the 2013 education reform law. This component of the law, requires the Department to evaluate and rate schools based on their performance on the following eight measures:

The Iowa School Report Card rates schools on the following educational measures:

  • Proficiency: The percentage of students scoring proficient or better on reading and mathematics assessments.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (FRL, IEP and ELL): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for students with disabilities, students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals, and English Language Learners.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (Minority student within school comparison): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for between minority and non-minority students. This measure reports the difference in proficiency levels between student groups within the school.
  • Closing Achievement Gap (Minority student to state average): A measure that reflects a statewide goal of narrowing the gap in achievement for between minority and non-minority students. This measure reports the difference in proficiency levels between minority students in the school to the statewide average.
  • College and Career-Ready Growth: The percentage of students who are making the year-to-year growth necessary to be ready for college and career training by the end of high school.
  • Annual Expected Growth: The percentage of students making a year of academic growth in a year’s time on reading or mathematics assessments.
  • College and Career Readiness: The percentage of students who score at or above a level of performance in reading and mathematics that predicts a higher probability of postsecondary success. (Middle/high schools only.)
  • Graduation Rate: The percentage of ninth-grade students who finished high school within five years. (High schools only.)
  • Attendance: The average daily attendance of students, which is the total number of days students were enrolled and present divided by the total number of possible attendance days.
  • Staff Retention: The percentage of teachers, school administrators and other licensed staff members who remained employed in a school over consecutive school years.
  • Parent Involvement Teacher Survey: A survey of teacher practices and perceptions of parent involvement. This measure is for information purposes only and is not included in the overall rating. This measure along with a parent survey to parents will be included in the ratings in future versions of the report card.

We believe this information can be helpful in our goal of having the finest academic and extra-curricular programs in the state. Not in some things but in everything. Not for some kids but for every kid. However, student performance data only tells part of the story about how our schools are doing. Our belief as a district is that it is critical that we maintain a mindset of continuous improvement for all of our programs, learners and staff. Working with our schools to support high learning expectations for your child(ren) is a critical component to achieving excellent outcomes for each and every student.

Our students are scheduled to take only one MAP test a day. You can help our students do their best on these assessments by making sure they get enough sleep (8-10hrs) and have a good breakfast.

Updated Spartan Safe Snack List:  Every six months, we update our Spartan Safe Snack List.  The list includes the items that we allow in our classrooms to make sure all students can enjoy them safely.  Check out the list here!

Speeding Tickets – Bridgeview Style: Please ask your children about speeding tickets being issued in the halls at Bridgeview.  We are working to improve the safe and respectful passage in our hallways, especially during the lunch/recess time frame.  Students are asked to walk in the hallways, use an appropriate voice level while moving down the hall from lunch to be respectful to our peers, and to walk on the appropriate side of the hallway.  Violators are issued a ticket from an adult and expected to sit “reflectively” for 10 minutes during their recess as a consequence.  It is amazing to see the improvement that has already been noticed by adults in the building.

Join Us at the Rink –  Parents and students are reminded of the PTA Skate Party scheduled for Tuesday, January 17 from 6-8 PM at the Skate Park in Eldridge.  Plan to come join the fun!

And Another PTA Event – Mark your calendar now for the PTA Movie Night in Bridgeview’s very own gym on Friday, January 27!!  Great family fun for the perfect price ————-FREE!

Drop-Off Reminder – On the days when the wind chill/temperature (below 0) or the rain prevents students from participating in Yak n’ Trak and students are entering through Door C.  Please continue to pull all the way up as far as you can go and have the students walk the short distance back to Door C if need be.  Your assistance allows us to unload more students along the sidewalk more quickly and keeps the traffic moving ensuring more students are able to arrive at school on time.   As always, thank you for your cooperation and help in these matters.

Bridgeview

Holiday Wishes – May the joy of the season and the warm presence of family and friends be a part of your holiday celebrations.  Thank you for sharing your children with us; we look forward to their return in the New Year!

Winter Weather:  As the temperatures stay cold this winter, please remember that our building does not open until 8:05 AM.  Students will have Yak-n-Trak and other outdoor recesses when the temperature including wind chill is zero degrees or above.   If the temperature (wind-chill included) is less than zero degrees, our students stay inside for recess.  When they do go outside, please make sure that your student(s) is dressed appropriately (coats, gloves or mittens, hats, snowpants and boots if necessary).  Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Bridgeview Pick-Up and Drop Off Procedures: With the onset of cold and snowy weather, more students are being dropped off and picked up rather than walking.  Due to that fact, a couple of reminders:

  1. Please plan for a little additional time in the mornings to allow students to be in the school and their classrooms by 8:30.  Three days of tardiness results in the equivalent of a day’s absence and we are working every day to minimize those absences by arriving on time and practicing healthy habits.
  2. Even with the winter weather, the left lane on Davenport is not a turn lane into Bridgeview.  The right lane is the only turn lane into the school drive.  Once that turn is made, the driveway does allow two lanes of traffic through the parking lot.
  3. Regardless of whether the morning recess is outside (Yak-n-Trak) or inside (Chill-n-Chat), please pull as far forward as you are able, dropping off your students anywhere along the sidewalk once the car in front of you is stopped.  On days the students are in the gym, please do not stop right outside Door C but continue to pull as far forward as you are able.
  4. Continue to cross the parking lot at the crosswalk in front of Door A.  This provides the best safety option for students and parents alike.

We appreciate your efforts to be patient and observe these procedures.  Every child’s safety is worth considerably more than two extra minutes in anyone’s day.

Thank You For Your Generosity!  Thank you one and all for your outpouring of generosity for Caleb’s Alive in Me Foundation.  Late this week with several more boxes to empty, Bridgeview students and families had collected somewhere between 800-900 items to donate to local hospitals for pediatric patients.  The model of “caring” that you have helped your child show is a wonderful life lesson about helping others.  Thank you for your amazing example of kindness!!

Winter Party – Students will celebrate the season with a holiday party on Thursday, December 22 beginning at 2:30.  For those individuals who are bringing/sending treats, remember  to consider non-food items  and if food items are included, to be sure and follow the Spartan Safe Snack list.

Elementary Orchestra and 6th Grade Choir Combine for Beautiful Concert

Posted December 12th, 2016

Pleasant Valley’s youngest musicians shined on December 8, 2016.  The Elementary Orchestra students and 6th Grade Choir worke together to put on a concert.

This year, the 4th grade Orchestra has more than 150 students!  So, the class performed in two separate groups: Hopewell and Bridgeview under the direction of David Rosales and Riverdale Heights, Pleasant View and Cody under the direction of Robert Swinney.  The 4th Graders have only been playing together for seven weeks and they’ve already come very far, playing five pieces both with their bows and pizzicato.  The 5th Grade Orchestra, under the direction of Sara Tinsman, is now playing full pages of music!  They played four pieces, including “We Will Rock You!”  The 6th Grade Orchestra played beyond their years on songs like “Sleigh Ride Jingles” and “Conquistador.”

The 6th Grade Choir sang the challenging piece, “Bidi Bom,” as well as several holiday tunes.  Thanks to Mrs. Ann Lannan, who came to the rescue after 6th Grade Choir Director Margaret Thompson welcomed a brand new baby boy less than a week before the concert!

Thank you to Robert Swinney, Sara Tinsman, David Rosales, Rebekah Weber, Heater Steffes, Margaret Thompson, Ann Lannan, Elisabeth Josie, Deborah DCamp and Perry Mears for all they do to support our budding musicians.

Riverdale Heights Delights during Winter Program

Posted December 9th, 2016

What a debut for new Riverdale Heights Music Teacher, Mr. Connell!  Students at Riverdale Heights performed his first winter program for PV on December 8, 2016.

The 6th Grade kicked off the concert with a beautiful rendition of “Snowflake Carol.”  The Kindergarten entertained as they sang “I Want to be an Elf.”  The 5th Grade and 4th Grade both performed on their recorders.  The 2nd Grade kicked up the tempo with “Mittens and Gloves.”  We all know “My Favorite Time of Year,” thanks to the 1st Graders, and the 3rd Grade sang “Silent Night” in Japanese.  Harmonics, the 4th and 5th Grade choir, sang challenging songs, even one without accompaniment!  The 6th Grade Band brought it home with a jazzy version of “Jingle Bells” called “Jingle Jumble.”  The concert ended with an all-school and audience sing of “Deck the Halls.”

Thank you to Mr. Connell, band director Mrs. Isaacson and her student teacher Ms. Thompson!

Bridgeview

Winter Program, December 6: The Bridgeview Elementary Holiday Program is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, at 1:30 PM in the school gymnasium.  The audience waiting line for the program will be formed outside Door C (the gym entrance).  Door C will open at 1:00 PM, which allows time for students to conclude their lunch time in the cafeteria.  In addition to parking in the school lots which have been expanded, there will be a limited number (approximately 30) of new parking spots accessible on the playground blacktop. Those spots will be available beginning at 12:45 PM (as the students conclude their recess time) and will be accessed from the new sidewalk on the east side of the building. Parking attendants will direct you to this new location.  The performance is expected to last approximately one hour.  Parents who wish to take their child(ren) home with them following the program are asked to notify their child’s teacher or the office in writing in advance of the performance.  Our students look forward to sharing their musical talents with you and greatly appreciate your attendance at the program.  (PS—Be sure to look for your children’s lost and found items on the table displayed right inside the cafeteria!)

Caleb’s Alive in Me Giving Opportunity: Students have done an amazing job bringing in unwrapped toys and books to donate to pediatric patients in local hospitals during the holiday season.  As a reminder, these donated items will continue to be collected through Friday, December 16 when they will be shared with the recipients.  Adults attending the winter program are welcome to contribute items if they so desire.  A collection box will be inside Door C for that purpose.

Early Dismissal: Parents are reminded that Wednesday, December 7 is a 1:30 dismissal.

The Time is Now:  With the recent change in the weather, please encourage and help your children wear appropriate winter apparel———–heavier coats/jackets, gloves/mittens, hats, and eventually snow pants and boots.  The sudden change in temperatures have caught students unprepared and knocking on Mrs. Strobbe’s door.  While she is always willing to lend items for “emergency use.” Coming dressed warmer from the start is probably a better plan!

Stuck for Gift Ideas: If your children are looking for the perfect gift or decoration to make during the holiday season, PTA has an awesome opportunity for you.  Please plan to attend the PTA Holiday Creation event next Friday evening, December 9, in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30 PM.  It’s a wonderful family make and take opportunity and the best news of all—————————there is no cost to this family affair!  See you there!
