New Math Studio Creates Environment for Teacher Learning

This year, Pleasant Valley is trying something new.  It’s called a Math Studio.  Together, teachers from a grade level plan a lesson and then watch one teacher as he or she executes that lesson.  It gives them an opportunity to watch a lesson live, instead of talking about it afterwards, and it helps the team of teachers explore a new initiative this year:  teaching Habits of Mind and Habits of Interaction.  These two instructional pieces help students know how to behave intelligently when they don’t know the answer. It’s about giving our students tools to think like a problem solver.

Along with the Area Education Agency and Teacher Leadership Coordinators, the 5th Grade teachers at Bridgeview and Cody tried this for the first time on September 28, 2017.  Mrs. Sitrick taught a class about place value — along the way asking students to explain their thinking and write in their Habits of Mind journals about what they learned. After the lesson, the 5th grade team and administrators met to talk about what they learned, too.  A new way of collaborating with the emphasis on our kids.
