MAP & FAST Testing, September 5:  Starting on September 5th our students will begin the FAST assessment. This assessment is a screener of foundational literacy skills. The assessment itself is a series of short one minute assessments in kindergarten and first grade. Second through sixth grade students will read three different passages, each lasting one minute.

September 5th will also mark the start of MAP testing for students in grades three through six. We take two MAP Assessments one Math and one Reading. Our students are scheduled to take only one MAP test a day. You can help our students do their best on these assessments by making sure they get enough sleep (8-10hrs) and have a good breakfast.

School Board Forum:  Come and meet the candidates for Pleasant Valley School Board Director District #2, Brent Ayers and Deborah Kepple-Mamros.  On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, there will be an informal meet and greet event at 7:00pm in the Bridgeview Library (316 S. 12th Street, LeClaire, IA 52753).  Both candidates are running for the seat vacated by Heather Witters.  The school board election is Tuesday, September 12, 2017.

Run with Carl, Monday, September 4:  You still have time to sign up for Run with Carl.  We have two races for kids, a ½ mile and a 1 mile, as well as a 5k and 5 mile!  Proceeds provide scholarships for PVHS students.  Register at www.runwithcarl.com.  It’s going to be a beautiful Labor Day!

Parents should drop off their children in the designated drop-off zone in the southernmost west parking lot.  Parents can park in the designated parking areas to the west of the stadium or at the Belmont Administration Center. Students walking in the parade should check in with teachers and principals in the area south of the west parking lots.  Please plan to arrive by 5:30 p.m. Parents are welcome to walk with their children.

Pick up procedures – Please see the purple markings on the map above: Students who participate in the parade need to be picked up at the west ticket booth, northeast of the drop off area. Do not pick up students prior to the end of the parade route. Students need to be picked up by parents no later than 6:30 p.m.

Stay for the Carnival after the Parade!  We will have food trucks, a dunk tank, caricatures, face painting, henna, games, and much more. Admission is free at the Carnival, but wristbands which include unlimited games, 1 face painting, and 1 henna are $5 or individual tickets for games can be purchased for $0.50. All proceeds will be donated to the Student Hunger Drive. Food Trucks and Caricatures have various prices and will accept cash.

  • Storytime Kickoff—Welcome back Family Storytime and check out our beautiful new picture book shelving! Enjoy a craft, face-painting, and balloon animals afterwards. Best for ages 3-6, though all are welcome. Join us Tuesday, September 5th at 6:30pm.
  • Crafternoon—Come get crafty at the library! This drop-in program is fun for all ages. Join us Wednesday, September 6th from 3:00-4:00pm.
  • Mini Makers—Sensory play encourages toddlers to explore and get to know the world around them. Come to the library to make a mess, have fun, and experience new things on the first Thursday of every month. This program is best for ages 10 months to 3 years. Join us Thursday, September 7th at 10:30am.
  • Tinker Lab: Button-Making—Turn any image into something wearable and totally unique when you explore the library’s new button maker. Try some fun button-making challenges to exercise your creativity. Each participant gets 3 free buttons, and then they are $0.10 apiece. Best for ages 10+. Join us Thursday, September 7th at 4:30pm.
  • Storytime in the Park—Join us for a special outdoor storytime in Hollyhock Park! Listen to stories, sing, and dance before enjoying a special treat. Raining? Come to the library instead. Join us Saturday, September 9th at 10:30am.

Free Smoke Alarms:  The American Red Cross in collaboration with local fire departments and community partners will be installing 700 free smoke alarms in homes throughout the Quad City area on Saturday, October 14. Anyone who needs smoke alarms can sign-up at SoundtheAlarm.org or call 844-319-6560 and press 9.

Hopewell Harvest Volunteers Needed! Help is needed on Friday, October 13th from 5-8 pm for the Hopewell Harvest! Hopewell Harmony:  Hopewell Elementary is thrilled to offer a 4th and 5th grade choir for the 2017-2018 school year. The ensemble is designed to create another opportunity for our students to express their love of music. The choir will be directed by Ms. Casey and will perform several times throughout the year including Winter Program, Fine Arts Night, and a Quad City Mallards hockey game.  The choir will meet every Tuesday after school from 3:00-3:45pm.  All transportation is the responsibility of the parent.   We will begin rehearsals on Tuesday September 19, 2017. Each student will pay $10 to cover the cost of their T-Shirt.   To sign up, please do the following:

Riverdale Heights Apparel Sale:  The PTA’s 2017 apparel sale begins August 28th. PLEASE NOTE: orders will not be accepted after September 5th.  Estimated shipping date is September 21st with orders shipped directly to your home.

Box Tops:  Riverdale Heights participates in the Box Tops for Education program. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school earn extra money. Starting in September there will be a monthly Box Tops Contest. The class with the most box tops returned will win the Riverdale Heights Box Tops Trophy, which can proudly be displayed in their classroom. The winning classroom will also have their picture displayed in the atrium. Box tops can be returned in baggies labeled with student and class name and placed in the blue box in the atrium.

Run with Carl, Monday, September 4:  You still have time to sign up for Run with Carl.  We have two races for kids, a ½ mile and a 1 mile, as well as a 5k and 5 mile!  Proceeds provide scholarships for PVHS students.  Register at www.runwithcarl.com.  It’s going to be a beautiful Labor Day!

At our kickoff assembly, the junior high students chose the theme of “Hollywood” for the year. Join us in dressing up for these Hollywood themed spirit days to celebrate homecoming next week!

Tuesday: Movie in your PJs,
Wednesday: Incognito! Try to hide from the paparazzi by wearing hats, sunglasses, wigs, and anything else as a disguise.
Thursday: Spirit Day- wear your Spartan gear to cheer with the High School marching band and cheerleaders at the pep rally!
Friday: Red Carpet and Gold Oscars (7th wears red, 8th wears gold)

Stay for the Carnival after the Parade!  We will have food trucks, a dunk tank, caricatures, face painting, henna, games, and much more. Admission is free at the Carnival, but wristbands which include unlimited games, 1 face painting, and 1 henna are $5 or individual tickets for games can be purchased for $0.50. All proceeds will be donated to the Student Hunger Drive. Food Trucks and Caricatures have various prices and will accept cash.

Pleasant Valley Trap Team Calling all interested new shooters!!!  We will be having a New Shooter Field Day on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m.  Cost is $30.00 (includes box of ammunition, targets and hearing protection).  You are responsible for eye protection.  Location is our home trap field – Clinton County Sportsman Club, 2860 270th Street, Dewitt, Iowa. For any NEW shooter interested in taking part, please email kristinhwehrman@gmail.com or call/text Kris at 563-949-7122 for more information and to let her know you plan to attend.  This will be a great opportunity to practice shooting, learn about firearms, and meet the coaches!  We look forward to seeing you there!!

Community Opportunities

Free Smoke Alarms:  The American Red Cross in collaboration with local fire departments and community partners will be installing 700 free smoke alarms in homes throughout the Quad City area on Saturday, October 14. Anyone who needs smoke alarms can sign-up at SoundtheAlarm.org or call 844-319-6560 and press 9.

Announcements:

School Board Forum:  Come and meet the candidates for Pleasant Valley School Board Director District #2, Brent Ayers and Deborah Kepple-Mamros.  On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, there will be an informal meet and greet event at 7:00pm in the Bridgeview Library (316 S. 12th Street, LeClaire, IA 52753).  Both candidates are running for the seat vacated by Heather Witters.  The school board election is Tuesday, September 12, 2017.

Coronation, Friday, September 8: Voting for Homecoming King and Queen will take place on the student portal throughout the week (deadline Thursday at 3:30pm). The coronation of the Homecoming king and queen will take place Friday during the spirit assembly at 10:25 a.m.

Homecoming Dance, Saturday, September 9, 8:30pm: PVHS PTA needs your help.  We are looking for adults to chaperone the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  Please see SignUp (http://signup.com/go/iGEeTSW) for specific needs and let us know how you can help.
