What Students Already Know Helps Them Learn More

In Mrs. Gillbreck’s 2nd Grade class at Pleasant View Elementary, budding mathematicians learn they know more than they think they do.  Working together, they learned 10-facts (numbers that add up to 10) and double facts (like 4 + 4).  They’ve memorized those and know the answers stone cold.  In this lesson, they learned that knowing those answers can help them figure out other addition problems quickly, too. Like, if you know 4 + 4, it’s simple to figure out 4 + 5.

“Oh, that does make sense!” exclaimed one student.

It’s just another way students can learn to add and do it quickly.
