Pleasant Valley students just won the Iowa Ethics Bowl! Dr. Lundberg started the team this year to connect to work they do in AP English Language and Composition on using ethical reasoning to support arguments about controversial issues.
The students on the winning team are: Gretchen Highbergerm Nirmal Alla, Leila Assadi, Elyanna Toulou, and Anagha Sudhindra. The other students who competed are also eligible to (sub in to) compete. They are Josh Thomas, Megan McKnight, Shobini Iyer, Arush Kachru, Kushi Maridu, Isaiah Pielak, Prashna Dahal, Tejus Kanathur, and Luke Thompson. All the students practiced and honed arguments together, so it's definitely a team victory!
The students needed to be ready to apply ethical reasoning to any of 15 real-life ethical scenarios. They have done a great deal of research, in addition to learning key ethical frameworks, such as Aristotle's Virtue Ethics, Kant's Deontology, Utilitarianism, and Feminist Care Ethics.
The team advances to regionals which will take place February 22. If they win, they advance to the national competition!
