Dr. Jeremy Hoffman ('07) Named 2024 Wall of Honor Distinguished Alumni Recipient

Dr. Jeremy Hoffman ('07) Named 2024 Wall of Honor Distinguished Alumni Recipient

Pleasant Valley High School is proud to announce Dr. Jeremy S. Hoffman, Class of 2007, as the 2024 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor Award. Dr. Hoffman, a climate scientist and advocate for climate justice, has dedicated his career to advancing environmental knowledge and community resilience through innovative science and public engagement.

Currently serving as the Director of Climate Justice and Impact at Groundwork USA, Dr. Hoffman’s achievements span extensive research, impactful community projects, and significant contributions to public understanding of climate issues. His journey began at PVHS, where he excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. A member of the National Honor Society, All-State Honor Choir, and a leader in athletics as a football and track captain, he exemplified the commitment to excellence that defines Pleasant Valley graduates. Dr. Hoffman’s senior year accomplishments included serving as Co-Editor of The Valenian and delivering the graduation commencement speech.

Dr. Hoffman continued his education at Augustana College, where he graduated summa cum laude and received a Bachelor of Arts in Geology. His dedication to environmental science was recognized early with awards like the David E. Lumley Young Environmental Scientist Award. He then earned his Ph.D. in Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences from Oregon State University, with research published in Science and cited in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 Report.

Professionally, Dr. Hoffman’s work has had far-reaching impact. He served as the Chief Scientist at the Science Museum of Virginia, where he led climate science initiatives and engaged communities in environmental action. His research on urban heat islands and community-based science campaigns, such as the "Heat Watch" initiative, has been featured in major media outlets like The New York Times, National Geographic, and NPR. These campaigns have empowered cities across the U.S. and internationally to address environmental inequities and climate resilience.

Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Hoffman is deeply involved in community efforts. He co-chaired the City of Richmond’s RVAgreen2050 Equitable Climate Adaptation Plan and volunteers with local initiatives. His commitment to mentorship is evident through his work with students at the Science Museum of Virginia and his role as affiliate faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond.

Dr. Hoffman’s career serves as an inspiration, illustrating the impact of pursuing knowledge and advocating for a more just and sustainable world. We congratulate Dr. Hoffman on his many achievements and welcome him to the Wall of Honor, where his legacy will continue to inspire PV students for generations to come.
