Celebrating Substitute Educators Day: Spotlight on Sonica Riat

Celebrating Substitute Educators Day: Spotlight on Sonica Riat

At Pleasant Valley, our substitute educators play a vital role in supporting our students and schools. Today, on Substitute Educators Day, we are excited to celebrate and share the story of Sonica Riat, who substitutes across the PV district, bringing passion and purpose to every classroom she enters.

We recently caught up with Sonica to learn more about her experiences as a substitute teacher and what she loves most about the role.

What do you enjoy most about being a substitute teacher?
"I truly enjoy being able to see many different kids on a day-to-day basis. I have made so many meaningful connections with students from all over the district. I love knowing the story behind every name, because it brings meaning and purpose to what I do as a substitute teacher."

What’s one of the most rewarding aspects of substitute teaching?
"One of the most rewarding things about being a substitute teacher is seeing students get excited to see me back in their classroom. It’s fulfilling to know I’ve made enough of an impact for them to remember me and feel comfortable learning while I’m in their space."

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a substitute teacher?
"Go for it! It’s a great way to engage with students in a meaningful way, learn more about the teaching profession, and make a difference in kids’ lives every day."

What keeps you coming back to Pleasant Valley classrooms day after day?
"Pleasant Valley is committed to a community that fosters positivity, diversity, and inclusion for all. Every day when I come to work, I am welcomed with big smiles. I see the faculty spreading love and great vibes throughout the school. All the students are also a treat to talk to and have beautiful personalities that I want to explore."

Sonica’s dedication to building meaningful connections with students and supporting their success embodies the heart of our PV community. Thank you, Sonica, for the energy, compassion, and positivity you bring to our schools each day.

To all of our substitute educators—thank you for stepping in and making a difference. You are an invaluable part of our Spartan team!
