It’s a record year for PTA Reflections! On January 16, Pleasant Valley Schools celebrated the 229 entries in this year’s competition. The contest encourages students to express themselves through visual arts, film, music composition, dance choreography, literature and photography. Every year there is a theme and this year students were asked to “Look Within.”
When students participate in the arts, they succeed in other areas as well. More than 65 distinct relationships between the arts and academics, cognitive and social outcomes are documented. Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the arts in America, cites the following benefits for youths who participate in the arts at least three hours or three days each week. Students are:
• 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
• 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
• 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
• 4 times more likely to perform community service
Congratulations to all who participated. For a full list of artists, click here. Those works that earned an Award of Excellence will be forwarded to the state competition.
A special thanks to the team of PTA parents who organize this event. THANK YOU!
