Mrs. Staley's 3rd Grade class at Cody is busy working out word problems. Using their whiteboards, teams of two draw out the problem. In this case, "There are 6 trees along the river with 14 robins in each tree. Later that day, 24 of the robins flew away. How many robins are left in all of the trees?" Making bar graphs help students visualize and determine the right answer. By working together, they explain their reasoning, ask genuine questions, and listen -- all habits of mind and interactions we teach for all math classes.
